How it works

WHAT IT DOES

This feature helps with getting in and out of parking spots. The most advanced systems can locate an appropriate spot, steer, shift, accelerate, and brake, and can handle both perpendicular and parallel parking. Others require you to control the pedals or to shift between drive and reverse.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT

Sonar, radar, and/or camera systems measure empty spaces and maneuver the vehicle into them with automatic steering and braking. The feature won’t activate if there isn’t sufficient room to parallel park, which helps ensure that the car won’t bump into any nearby cars.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

  • Activate Active Parking Assist, and drive slowly (typically below 20 mph). Wait as the system searches for an available parking space.
  • Once found, you will be prompted to let go of the steering wheel, and, if necessary, to shift into reverse. Follow any instructions provided by the system.
  • Depending on the system in your car, you may be required to shift between drive and reverse, or to operate the brakes. Check your owner’s manual to determine exactly what your car’s specific system requires you to do.
  • After your car is parked, you may need to do some slight adjustments to make sure your car is in an optimal position.

IMPORTANT

  • Like other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Active Parking Assistance relies on sensors that need to be properly calibrated and maintained in order to work properly. This maintenance should only be performed by a trained professional.
  • You can typically override the system by moving the steering wheel. Consult your owner’s manual for specific features of your system.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings while parking, and keep an eye out for any people or animals that may enter your parking path.
