Direct Driver Monitoring System

This technology’s job is to help ensure you are doing your job behind the wheel.

What It Does

What It Does: This technology detects a driver’s eye and/or head movements to estimate where the driver is looking. If distraction is detected, it can provide a warning or limit the use of other features.

What It Does Not Do: It cannot detect intoxication or drug impairment, or guarantee that you are alert enough to drive safely.

How it works

WHAT IT DOES

Infrared cameras can track head and eye movements and determine whether a driver is looking away from the road for extended periods of time. It is called a “direct” monitoring system because it looks at the driver to determine whether he or she is paying attention, rather than relying on behaviors like steering wheel movement. If inattention is detected, then the vehicle provides an alert, such as a noise or vibration. In some cases, if those warning are ignored, the system may prevent certain features from being used by the driver.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT

This is artificial intelligence in action! Cameras capture the driver’s image, and algorithms detect patterns that indicate looking away from the road.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Sunglasses are crucial for driving on bright days, but heads up – this system won’t work reliably if it can’t see your eyes.

IMPORTANT

  • This technology is new and isn’t perfect. Due to differences in how systems intervene with drivers, some Direct Driver Monitoring Systems are more effective than others; for example, Consumer Reports found that GM and Ford systems prevented drivers from using active driving assistance if they were not looking at the road.
  • Do not rely on this technology to determine whether you are alert or sober enough to drive safely. If you feel sleepy or impaired, then do not start driving.

Question & Answers

Does this work on all kinds of faces?

Yes, this technology tracks eye and head movements regardless of age, sex, race, or other characteristics. It even works in the dark in many cases.
