Lane Centering Assistance - My Car Does What Lane Centering Assistance - My Car Does What

Lane Centering Assistance

Helping you to keep your car right where it’s supposed to be: In between the lines.

What It Does

What It Does: Keeps your car in the middle of its lane on marked roadways.

What It Does Not Do: It does not change lanes or drive the car for you, and it usually cannot help on unmarked roadways.

How it works

WHAT IT DOES

Think of it as going one step further from Lane Keeping Assist. Whereas Lane Keeping Assist puts you back on track if you drift toward the edge of a lane, Lane Centering Assistance prevents you from drifting in the first place.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT

This feature relies on detecting painted lane markings. This is a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System – it steers and brakes subtly, as necessary, in order to maintain a position in between lane markings while you remain in complete control of the car.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Pay attention to the road, because if lane markings change or become difficult to see, then the system may not work. If you need to change lanes, or otherwise want to cancel the assistance, then turn on your indicator and drive as you normally would to override the system. (If you do not use your indicator, the system may “fight” to keep you centered in your lane.) Remember, it is not driving the car for you. It will not steer around obstructions or stopped vehicles.

IMPORTANT

  • Lane Centering Assistance may not work if lane lines are worn down or covered in dirt, water, or snow.
  • This feature may deactivate if your hands do not remain on the wheel.
  • This is not a “self-driving” feature. It performs one task – keeping you in the middle of marked lanes. If your car also has adaptive cruise control, then the two features can work together to maintain speed, or to speed up or slow down, while also keeping you centered in your lane.

Question & Answers

What if there are no lane markings on the road?

This feature will not work, just like Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assistance.

Will this feature work if there is snow on the ground?

The system must be able to read painted road markings. If these road markings are partially covered by snow, ice, leaves or mud, then Lane Centering Assistance, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assistance will not function. Check your owner’s manual or ask your dealer about the limitations of this feature.

What is the different between Lane Keeping Assistance and Lane Centering Assistance?

Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA) helps prevent the vehicle from drifting into another lane or running off the road. It only acts when the system senses your vehicle is about to cross a lane marking or the side of the road. Lane Centering Assistance (LCA), on the other hand, prevents that drifting in the first place. It continually works to keep your vehicle in between lane markings. Different automakers use different proprietary names for their systems, which can be confusing, so make sure to check your owner’s manual, and think: Is this system activating when I’m about to leave my lane (LKA), or is it trying to prevent me from getting close to leaving my lane (LCA)?>
