Driver Re-Engagement System - My Car Does What Driver Re-Engagement System - My Car Does What

Driver Re-Engagement System

A real attention-getter, this feature can stop the car if a driver is unresponsive.

What It Does

What It Does: A series of escalating warnings and interventions to get the attention of a driver. In the event that a driver does not engage with these signals, the system can stop the car.

What It Does Not Do: This is not a routine self-driving feature for an unresponsive driver, though some systems may be able to steer the vehicle to the side of the road.

Quick Guide

1. Detection

The system will alert you that it senses a problem based on your movements or your driving performance.

2. Escalation

Alerts will intensify if there is still no indication you are paying attention.

3. Action

If there is still no response, the system will bring the car to a stop.

How it works

WHAT IT DOES

A Direct or Indirect Driver Monitoring System will detect whether it is likely that a driver is not paying adequate attention to the roadway. The system then sends a visual, audio, or haptic (vibration) alert to the driver. If the driver does not respond – for example, by putting hands back on the steering wheel – then the Driver Re-Engagement System alerts will intensify. If there is still no response, then the system can safely bring the vehicle to a stop, and in some cases, send an emergency notification.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT

Like other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Driver Re-Engagement Systems rely on cameras and sensors. They work in tandem with Driver Monitoring Systems.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

When the alert happens, place your hands on the steering wheel and maintain full attention on the roadway. If you are drowsy, not feeling well, or otherwise unable to stay fully alert and engaged with the driving task, then safely pull over and call for help.

IMPORTANT

Do not rely on this technology to drive for you if you do not feel 100% up to the task. It does not make your car into a robotaxi – it’s an emergency feature. If you feel sleepy or impaired, do not start driving.

Question & Answers

If this feature wakes me up, is it OK to keep driving?

The system did its job by getting your attention back on the road, but you’re not out of trouble yet. You should find the first safe place to stop, and then rest or call for help. You should not rely on this feature for regular assistance. It cannot guarantee crash prevention.
